Even though you have a full schedule, do you feel guilty when you say NO?
Networking events, invitations for coffee or lunch, partnership opportunities, business ideas, new projects. It adds up fast.
Knowing how to say no is not something that comes naturally to a lot of people. But if you are feeling overwhelmed and maxed out in your business, maybe it is time to stop saying YES on autopilot.
It can be difficult turning people away when you have been a yes person for so long. You might feel awful. You might feel like you are letting people down.
But saying no does not make you a bad person. It means you are respecting the fact that you cannot do everything.
What you are really saying YES to:
- Say YES to simplifying your business.
- Say YES to less stress and more time.
- Say YES to the things aligned with your business plan, your passion, and your desired lifestyle. Family, friends, yourself.
Learning how to say no is learning how to be a better communicator. Not just with the person you are refusing, but with your internal self. There are simply times when you deserve to put your needs before others.
Every new opportunity asks for your time. You get to decide whether it fits the life and business you want to build.
A few tips that will help you say no without the guilt.
Be gracious.
You will not have to worry about hurting someone’s feelings if you decline politely. A smile and a simple “I am sorry but…” goes a long way. Most people will understand.
Be honest.
Be upfront and let them know as quickly as possible so they can move on to find the right person. You do not need to explain every reason. A brief, truthful response is enough. The worst thing you can do is make up an elaborate excuse. You will feel guilty for not being truthful, and you risk them finding out.
Know that it is OK.
It is your right to say no. Some people say NO is a complete sentence. I think that can come across as a bit harsh, but the point of the phrase is to remind you that it is OK to say no. Especially when something is going to take up time and space you do not have right now.
I have been practicing this in my own business for a long time.
Even the situations I thought would be hard turned out OK.
Saying NO after being involved with a project for a long time. Opting out of attending an event with important contacts. These felt like big decisions at the time.
No one wound up angry. In some cases, it strengthened the relationship. In others, it became the perfect YES for someone else.
It gets easier. And once you start, you realize how much of your schedule was filled with things that were not moving your business forward.
There is a difference between stopping because you are exhausted and stopping because you chose to.
One leaves you with regret. The other creates space.
Saying no in the moment is one skill. Knowing what to stop, step back from, or let go of in your business is a bigger decision.
Stopping a project that no longer fits. Stepping back from a networking group that takes more than it gives. Letting go of a service that drains your energy for low return. Saying no to a good opportunity because it does not match your plan right now.
Those decisions become much easier when you have a clear plan to measure them against.
In Addition…
Choosing what to stop creates space for what matters most. As your priorities become clearer, it becomes easier to make decisions about your marketing, offers, referrals, and every new opportunity that comes your way.
Saying no gets easier when you can see what you are saying yes to.
Your Brand Toolkit gives you that view.
When your goals, your capacity, and your plan are in one place, you stop guessing. Your Toolkit helps you see what to start, stop, grow, or change. A new opportunity shows up and you have something to measure it against.
A no backed by your actual plan feels obvious. A no without context feels like a gamble.
Start saying YES to what really matters. I use this approach with all of my clients.
If your schedule is full but your business feels stuck, that is worth a conversation.
We can look at where your time is going and whether it matches what you are building.
